For Him

The world is now aware - aware that we have spent centuries, living in a systems that didn't allow all humans to live fully. That awareness, however, seems to be one sided. There is a lot of talk about women and empowering women and uplifting women and I find all of these very exciting, necessary and commendable.

But. What about the men?

I believe that it is only possible to achieve a truly equal world if the new awareness of equality, carters to both men and women, without consistently portraying one gender as victims or perpetrators. I agree that some issues are really gender sensitive, especially issues that are grounded in health and reproduction. However, by and large, a lot of the issues that are being spoken of like they are gender sensitive really are not. They are human issues and, in order to not do a disservice to humanity, it is important that we perceive, contemplate and address them as such.

Because of this conviction, I have finally taken a step towards something that I have wanted to do for almost a decade, which is to be a voice that helps create awareness for a balance. I created a Facebook group called 'For Him' and have started weekly Facebook live sessions, to discuss different issues that affect men and things that we have been socialised to consider true for all men.

It is not a group for men but it is a group where we think, talk and engage to make equality truly equal.

Men, I believe, have found themselves in a unique time - a time between the astute, hunter-male image of manliness and the expressive, laid-back image; a time when the image of women that their fathers told them about, is different from the image of women that they may meet. They have the task of navigating the waters of feminism activism and equality balance and they don't seem to be getting attention enough, to equip them. Hopefully, the conversations in "For Him" will do it's part in helping this balance.

Feel free to join in the group here https://www.facebook.com/groups/401528013564309/

You can check out the first live video I made to introduce the group below and please, join in on the live cast, every Saturday, at 6pm GMT.
