Kim Kardashian's Visit to Nigeria: My 2 cents (or 5)
It is no longer news that Kim Kardashian came to Nigeria...a good number of us heard of her arrival (and the pandemonium it caused at Eko hotel), heard her Interview with Gbemi on Beat FM (or listened to podcast *really good interview by the way*), saw pictures of her at Darey's event and heard that the crowd went wild when she said 'Hey Naija'. We also heard that she left a few minutes after the event started (an event that is being described as the best ever staged in Nigeria )
A few days later, MediaTakeOut put up a post about the whole thing (read it here). My problem with that post is this tiny part ....
Several Nigerians promoted this article on blogs and radio and social media, almost as if they were BLIND to these FACTS
1. She was not invited to a CLUB. She was invited to an Event (and Eko hotel is certainly not a club)
2. $640 translates to between N96,000 and N99,200. Darey's event had tickets for 5000; 30,000; 50,000 (couple); 1 million (10 people); 2 million (10 people).
So, at what point were Nigerians asked to pay $640 to 'party' with Kim Kardashian and take pictures with her?
I have no verification as to how much she was really paid (and I am not inclined to believe MTO due to thelies errors I pointed out above) but regardless, I feel that what ever she was paid was what was agreed on for the exact duties she carried out. It's not her fault that she was able to strike a favorable bargain.
Finally, I honestly think that her visit to Nigeria did more for her popularity (as a matter of fact, I think she gained much much more than she gave). Judging from Gbemi's interview, she must have done some 'Kim K research' before the interview (and I'm still wondering why she couldn't be taken to the Beat FM studio to do the interview live sha)...judging from the trends on 'Nigerian-Twitter', a lot of Nigerians that didn't 'send' her before at least noticed her and talked about her.
What ever we say, however we think about it, these facts are certain:
1. Kim kardashian and her management understand the art of making money
2. Kim Kardashian has become, almost a house hold name in Nigerian (even among those who do not watch E!)
3. The people who went for Darey's show were not forced to go...and most of them got their money's worth in good entertainment
