"Do you know who I am? Google me."
Just now I was listening to Rhythm FM Lagos online and I heard Toke Makinwa and Nanya bantering.
Nanya said "Do you know who I am"
Toke said "I should google you" "but everytime I do all I see is Toke's PA"
It was a fun laugh but it got me thinking (I know, I know, my mind has the tendency to wonder)
At one point or the other, I believe that most of us have had to deal with (or be a) "do-you-know-who-I-am" slinger...those people who are so impressed with themselves or the title they bear that they have to consistently remind anyone that hears, of who they are. I find it very exhausting. I personally think that if you have to ask me if I know who you are then chances are that:
1. I indeed do not know, and that means you are probably not as important to my existence as you think you should be
2. I really do not care, and that means you are probably not as important to my existence as you think you should be
3. You really are insecure and have personal demons to fight and the only thing that gives you respite is you position/name/accomplishment, and that means, in my heart, I feel sorry for you.
At a point, it stopped being just about who the person was...it became about who the person knew and we would here things like "do you know who I am? who I know? in fact, let me call the ________ (fill in a significant government position)". I find this rather amusing sometimes, especially when the telecom service provider decides to show that the final gra gra is in the phone network.
Right now, with the digital age caching up quickly and more and more people feeling the need to stamp their virtual feet and leave digital foot prints on the internet, I have a feeling we will soon have people saying "do you know who I am? google me. I am on wikipedia".
I think a bit of that already happened a few years back when we started to pay attention to which celebrity was verified on twitter or not...as in, it actually made entertainment news headlines. Anyway, just so that you do not get left out in the trend, here is wishing you a safe journey in the quest to making yourself googleable. #SipsGreenTea.
