Move or Bloom: Your choice.
I remember seeing a decorative wooden piece on the wall of the living room in our little house in Festac with those words. I think I made that memory sometime in primary 6. I wanted to write something very meaningful and deep on my elder brother's birthday card (or was it his graduation card) and being young with not enough vocabulary that I thought was deep enough, I stole the words off the decoration but spelt it wrong and wrote 'you have gloomed where you were planted. congratulations'. It was my mum who noticed and pointed it out days after the card had been delivered and appreciated...it was one of those funny childhood embarrassing moments but thankfully, they all understood what I truly wanted to say.
When you have an adventurous spirit with ideologies that you are sometimes unsure of and too afraid to express, there is a tendency to keep moving. You jump ship in relationships, goals, careers and sometimes, religion and even the ideologies and values you hold dear. There is the tendency to keep moving...till you find what sates you or you die (get over dreading the idea of death by the way...we will all die eventually).
Moving often if fine. But so is staying put and making the best of what you have and where you are is equally as good (and sometimes better). Sometimes all the dreams you have of finding the perfect lover, taking over the world, becoming the brightest star in the sky...all these dreams could be yours if you just stay put and work on your bloom.
I was born with the spirit of a nomad (and mind of a magi and heart of an amazon and soul of a phoenix) and moving has been my thing. Every single time, moving has been for bigger and better and a lot of times, moving has been gainful. Overtime though, moving has been painful and came with losses...some losses, irreplaceable.
It is always a choice to take a risk and plunge with two feet up, into the unknown or to stay rooted on firm ground and create your own universe from that spot. And I think it's this constant choice that makes life the beauty and disaster it is.
If you move, may the wisdom of the magi be with you. If you stay, may you bloom where you are planted.
